How to Create Compelling Images with Canva

By on Oct 16, 2014

There is just something compelling about an interesting image that cuts through the online clutter and captures attention. Including a unique image on your website, in an article, or part of a social platform post is a great way to stand out.

In the past, an expensive graphic software program such as Photoshop was needed to create even the simplest of images. Today, high-powered tools are available online and cost next to nothing.

Canva is one example. It is simple to use, very easy to learn, and best of all — free.

Canva is a web-based design service that guides you through the process of creating great graphic designs. All you have to do is choose one of 20 currently available templates. New templates are being added all the time.

Or you can start from scratch and create a fully customized design. You can then use the layouts and background provided to create a rough draft of your original design. These tabs are full of options to choose from, whether you want a complete template or just a beautiful background to build on.

How Canva Works

Once you’ve created a free account, you are taken to a home screen with a set of predefined canvas sizes that match the dimensions of 20 different types of graphics you might want to create. From a Facebook cover, to a Twitter post picture, to a Pinterest picture — they have done the initial work for you. Designs for all of the popular social platforms are included.

Picking any one of the preset dimensions brings you to the design page where you can pick from a number of template designs. Then to use a particular template you just need to drag and drop it onto the canvas.

The website allows you to easily use stock images. Canva has a searchable library of hundreds of thousands of royalty free images. They also maintain a library of premium images that cost $1 per image per design. Paid images are clearly labeled in the Canva library. You also have the option of selecting images from My Computer or Facebook Account.

The company has an extensive (and growing) library of tutorials on the best design tips for putting together a compelling image. So, even if you’re a novice, you should be able to create an interesting image in no time.

Canva is a fantastic tool. It really does make designing interesting images accessible to anyone. To get started, play around with the templates provided. And, start simply. Once you start using Canva to create images, the simplicity and richness of the tools will keep you coming back for more.
