Using Google Scholar for Targeted Research

Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. The company has created many different tools to help them fulfill their mission.

One of those tools is Google Scholar — a specialized search engine that limits your search to articles, theses, books, abstracts and court opinions, from academic publishers, professional societies, online repositories, universities, and other such websites.

Google Scholar’s ability to search court opinions — in both state and federal courts — is something that could be useful for insurance agents who are looking for the most current information about insurance legal issues. I did a quick search for [insurance “data breach”] and in seconds had a listing of court opinions regarding interpretation of the legal implications of a data breach.

Once you complete a search, you can create a Google Alert that will notify you via email when any new search results that match your search criteria become available. Simply do a search for the topic of interest, click the envelope icon in the sidebar of the search results page, enter your email address, and click “Create alert.”

Google Scholar’s “My library” allows you to create a personal collection of articles. You can save articles right off the search page, organize them by topic, and use the power of Scholar search to quickly find just the one you want — at any time and from anywhere. You decide what goes into your library, and Google Scholar keeps the links up to date.
